Kayson Beck is a smart and energetic young lady. She is in the 4th grade at Shoals Elementary and just won her class Spelling Bee. When she arrived at our Toys for Tots warehouse/distribution site for the season, she was smiling from ear to ear. As she walked around the warehouse to see how the toys we collect were sorted and prepared for distribution, that smile never left her face. Kayson is the oldest child of Sara and Austin Beck, who served in the U.S. Marine Corps. Kayson and her family had adopted angels from the Angel Tree in the past and this year, Kayson told her mom that she wanted to do something special for the less fortunate children in her area. She decided to collect toys but was not sure who to contact to help distribute the toys to the appropriate families. She made flyers and passed them out at the Vintage Market Festival in November, asking people to help her collect toys that she would donate. Sara found Toys for Tots on the internet and contacted us to see if we would be able to help. Kayson’s mom Sara said, “Kayson has always been a very giving child, and always wants to help others. We are very proud of her.” Collecting toys was not the difficult part for her; Kayson has three younger siblings, a sister age 7 and two brothers, ages 4 and 2. So, keeping their fingers out of the toys was a little bit of a challenge. However, she did an excellent job because Kayson delivered her collection of toys to us one rainy afternoon and did not let that dampen her enthusiasm. She collected 45 toys, 6 books and 10 stocking stuffers. The toys she brought us were very much needed: Paw Patrol, Elsa and Anna from Frozen, a Doll house and even a robotic snake were among the toys and much, much more. Every year the Marine Corps League of Surry County Detachment #1322, Toys for Tots, puts out boxes to collect toys from the generous people of Surry County. They fill the boxes in Elkin, Dobson, Lowgap, Mt Airy and Pilot Mountain, for which we are very grateful. Having a beautiful young lady wanting to help others in her community had made the campaign season extra special for me, as the Toys for Tots Coordinator. We need more young people that are willing to take an active part in making our/their community a better place to live.
